As I see many of my friends and colleagues drafting their list of things that they'll change as they go into the new calendar year, I'm reminded of a networking dinner that I attended recently on the topic of "Navigating Career Change." This dinner was hosted by the Management Leadership for Tomorrow (MLT) NYC Alumni group and served as an opportunity for MLT Alumni like myself to engage with senior leaders on a variety of topics, including this one.
My group engaged in a meaningful discussion with Shani Bess, Vice President of Marketing at Borro, on her experience moving from a mid-size, private company to a large, public company and her experiences as a diverse leader over delicious food at Sinigual restaurant. Shani shared a few of her thoughts on making a career change and lifting as you climb below.
Into the Details
What was the first pivotal moment in your professional career?
The first pivotal moment in my professional career was my decision to leave the NBA and move on to American Express. Working at the NBA was my first job out of college and I had been there for over five years, but I knew that in order to continue growing, I needed to experience other organizations.
What is a current digital or strategic trend that you’re learning about or would like to learn more about?
I'm interested in learning more about Account Based Marketing and how it can be used for small organizations.
How are you able to best lift as you climb?
I believe that I am able to lift as I climb by being a resource for those who aren’t as far along on their career journeys. It’s important that I not only share my story with others but also share contacts and job opportunities that they could benefit from.
